CHOOSING A CAMPING TENT

What size camping tent is right for your needs?

Manufacturers rate their camping tents according the the tent capacity listed by number of people.  We would almost always recommend buying a tent that has more capacity than the number of people you think will be camping with you.  The exception to this is if you are shopping for a backpacking tent where weight is probably your most important consideration or if you are very limited as to space for what you can bring along on your camping trip.

Some considerations to remember when choosing the size camping tent you need -

 - Each person's sleeping area needs about a 3x7 foot space.

 - Remember you need room to change clothes etc. inside your camping tent.

 - Allow for room for your gear - you will want to store most things inside your tent or canopy to keep your camping gear out of the weather.  (Do not store food in your tent - you will not want any unwelcome visitors through the night looking for a midnight snack.)

 - Pay attention to the height dimensions when deciding on your camping tent.  It is much more comfortable to dress when you are standing or nearly standing.

 - Remember, if the weather is bad, you may spend alot more time in the tent than you originally planned.  A camping tent with an attached screen room area may be useful in this case.

 - Tents are designed to keep you dry and insect free.  They are generally not intended to keep you warm except as protection from the wind.  Choose your sleeping gear with this in mind.

Caring for your camping tent and gear-

- Most tents are made out of nylon.  The top and sometimes the sides are made out of breathable nylon to decrease condensation buildup over night.  The bottom and the rain fly are waterproof nylon.  Screens are generally nylon material as well.

- Never put your tent away wet.  If it was wet when you packed up camp, take it out and set it up at home to completely dry it out before storing your camping tent away.

- Use a mild liquid detergent to sponge away any dirt or mud inside.  Sweep out your tent after each use and any of our camping tents should give you years of dependable service.

- Make any necessary repairs as soon as possible so a small problem doesn't grow into a bigger one later.

- Store your camping tent in a cool, dry place in the storage bag provided with it.

TYPES OF CAMPING TENTS

Dome Style Camping Tents -

 - Shape is usually hexegonal such as the Eureka Tetragon series of tents but floor can be square as well such as the Eureka Sunrise camping tents.  The style is characterized by a generally rounded shape making the smaller models great for backpackers and canoeists.  The dome tents are very aerodynamic in shape making them good in windy conditions.  Because of the design of the exterior frame, the dome tents often have a more roomy feel for the size of the tent than some other camping tent styles.  The frame allows the camping tents to be free standing or self supporting so you can set up the tent then move it around the campsite to a place of your choosing.  Remember to stake it down after deciding on a spot or load gear into it before you lose it to the next strong wind gust.  Even some larger family tents such as the Eureka Titan or Eureka N!ergy camping tents are considered dome tents.

A-Frame Camping Tents -

- A great example of these tents is the Eureka Timberline series of camping tents. The A frame tents feature a simple yet effective shelter from the elements for backpackers and other back country campers because of the light weight, compact design.

 Cabin Style Camping Tents -

- Usually larger tents which feature vertical or near vertical walls giving a family room to stretch out.  These tents generally have alot of height in the center and near the walls to allow for maximum comfort and standing room.  Take a look at the Eureka Canyon series of tents or the Eureka Pine Lodge camping tent.  Many of these tents feature dividing walls for added privacy, attached canopies or screen rooms and room for a large family with all their camping gear.
